my parents: we want you to feel better! (bc youre making our lives hard) we think that you would feel better if you would move out again (bc you “destroy the harmony” in this household) we wish that you would get proper help at a psychiatry (bc youre a problem we want to get rid off) we only want the best for you (although we caused 99% of your problems in the first place)

For people who have Derealization, Depersonalization, or Dissociation:

If you feel like you’re stuck in a dream or aren’t sure if this is reality here are some reality checks.

  • Mirror Check: Stand in front of a mirror and look at your features. Notice the color of your eyes, birth marks, scars, any small detail. You will not be able to recognize these things in a dream.
  • Time Check: Look at the time on your phone. Wait for what feels like a few minutes then check the time again. If the time makes sense (eg: first check at 5:00, wait a few minutes, next check is 5:05) you are not in a dream.
  • The “Declaration of Independence” Check: This one sounds weird but trust me. Look up the Declaration of Independence and read it. Chances are you don’t have it memorized besides maybe a line or two. If it makes sense and the words are actually making coherent sentences, you are not in a dream. Words are often jumbled in dreams and not legible.
  • Hand Check: Look at your hand. Ask yourself if you’re dreaming. Look away. Look back at your hand. If your hand is disfigured in some way, stretched out, or a different color then you are dreaming. If it’s just your normal hand, you’re awake.
  • Text Check: Similar to the Declaration of Independence check (just a bit easier) reread your texts with someone. If you can easily read each text and have the conversation make sense, you are in reality. Taking it a small step further, if you decide to actually text that person and make a full legible sentence you are not in a dream.

These are all tips that I have found that work for me after doing some research myself. If you have any additional tips please add them below to help others!
